About this tool
Count the characters in any text, with and without spaces, along with words, lines and sentences. Character limits are common: search result titles are usually cut off at around 60 characters, meta descriptions at roughly 155, and many social platforms cap post length. Paste your text, watch the numbers update, and trim until you fit. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.
Worked example
“Hello, world!” is 13 characters with spaces and 12 without spaces. Social platforms and form fields usually count spaces, punctuation and line breaks, so use the with-spaces number against a limit.
Common problems and fixes
- An emoji counts as 2 characters.
- Many emoji are stored as two or more code units. Platforms differ in how they count them, so leave some room.
- My limit counts bytes, not characters.
- Accented and non-Latin letters use more than one byte in UTF-8, so a byte limit allows fewer characters than a character limit.
- Trailing spaces change the total.
- Trim spaces at the end if the field or API rejects extra whitespace.

Frequently asked questions
Do emoji and accented letters count as one character?
Each visible character is counted by its JavaScript length, so some emoji count as two. Platforms may count them differently.
What are typical SEO length limits?
Titles are usually cut off at roughly 60 characters and meta descriptions at roughly 155, but search engines measure in pixels, so treat these as guides.
Does it count line breaks?
Yes, a line break counts as one character in the with-spaces total.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. Everything runs inside your browser on your own device, so your files and text are never sent anywhere.
Is it really free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how often you use it.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes. It works in any modern browser on phones, tablets and computers. Very large files may be slow on older phones.
