- Reducing upload sizes.
About this tool
Reduce PNG size with lossy colour quantisation (UPNG). Fewer colours produce smaller files. Flat graphics, screenshots and logos compress well; photos in PNG may show banding at low colour counts, in which case JPG or WebP is a better format.
Worked example
Reducing a PNG to 128 colours can cut the file size a lot for logos, icons and flat graphics, because each pixel then needs fewer bits. Photos with gradients show banding at low colour counts.
Common problems and fixes
- The image looks blotchy.
- Use more colours (256) or switch to JPG or WebP for photographs.
- Transparency edges look rough.
- Fewer colours reduces soft shadows. Try 256 colours.
- Text became fuzzy.
- PNG compression here is lossy in colour only, so check text at 100% zoom.

Frequently asked questions
Is it lossless?
No. It quantises to a limited colour palette, which is lossy but looks fine for most graphics.
Is transparency kept?
Yes.
Which setting is best?
128 colours is a good start; use 256 for photos and 32 for flat logos.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. Everything runs inside your browser on your own device, so your files and text are never sent anywhere.
Is it really free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how often you use it.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes. It works in any modern browser on phones, tablets and computers. Very large files may be slow on older phones.
